Trust – the Currency of Research Collaboration in the Eternal Snow

During his visit to Greenland, Ambassador Mauro Reina learned first-hand about the impressive research Swiss scientists are conducting in the Arctic, particularly in the field of disaster risk management. The visit showcased Switzerland’s strong engagement in polar research and its relevance for local communities facing the impacts of climate change.

Following this visit, the Embassy engaged in further exchanges with the Swiss researchers involved. Through these conversations, we gained a deeper understanding of the importance of including the local perspectives and of ensuring that scientific knowledge benefits the communities where research takes place.

Building on these insights, the Embassy organized an event on 10 December 2025 around the screening of the movie “Der Eismann” about the Swiss polar researcher Konrad Steffen, followed by a panel discussion with Greenlandic and Swiss representatives from academia and the government. The panel focused on building trust between researchers and the Greenlandic population enabling Swiss scientists and local partners to collaborate even more effectively.
